Foo Fighters - Walk ( textual analysis )

Foo Fighters - Walk is a conventional rock video, being narrative as well as performance. In this case performance is key as it ultimately generates the bands income so therefore they must provide a star image. Performance is also significant whilst creating a rock music video as performing and playing instruments is what they love, and they wish to prove they are authentic. In order to create this star image a various number of close ups are used, predominantly on Dave Grohl as he is the face of the band. Right from the outset the audience know that the video well inhabit a rebelious tone and mood as the popular band 'coldplay' is disaplayed as a sticker (prop), and dave grohl sighs. This is conventional to be seen in a rock video as the heavy tone of music matches the agressive/rebelious attitude. Furthermore another set of matching takes place as the visuals are undoubtably matched with the lyrics 'learning to walk again.' This is key as it creates a continuity and interest for the audience, as Andrew Goodwin stated.

Irony and Humour plays a big part within this music video as from the outset a sign saying 'punk is dead' is displayed, suggesting that the rawness of music is non exsistent, nevertheless the foo fighters are trying to prove this theory wrong. The Mise en scene that is constructed is cleverly put together in order to suggest irony and humour. The costume is a suit, which is unconventional for a rock band to wear, however in this case it works as he is trying to break away from this convention, portraying his rebelious attitude. His clothing is contrasted with the prop of a guitar and a broken down car. These two props epitimise the rock genre, as it conventions are some what 'breaking out of the mould' 'i don't give a toss' attitude.

Editing is key within this music video as the variety of straight cuts are rhythmically in tuned with the music in order to enhance the rhythm and the mood of the music. There are also a couple of fade transitions used throughout in order to develop the continuity, which can also be literally translated in to 'contuinuing to walk again.' The other technical aspect i haven't yet mentioned is lighting, within this music video high key lighting is used in order to portray the 'realness' and 'rawness' of the setting as well as the music. Within the performance element of the video artificial lighting is placed high above the heads of the musicians in order to create a 'glowing' image, further enhanced by diegetic lighting which creates a natural, sunlight aesthetic.

The camerawork is an aspect which adds to the contuinity and composition of the video. Leading lines are constantly used in order to focus the audiences eyes onto the focus, being dave grohl, the star image of the band. Also steadycam is used effectively to create the feeling that we, the audience are walking alongside him.
